The Chinchorro were the first human group of the South American coast that worshipped their ancestors and death. They considered their mummies to be part of the world of the living, which explains why they left their bodies with their eyes and mouths open.
They all shared similarities such as the use of wigs, face masks and sticks to reinforce the body. In each case, the mortuary practice consisted of dehorning, eviscerating and drying the bodies with fire or ashes, and then stuffing and modeling them with clay, wool and vegetable fiber. Once this process was finished, the skin was reattached.
Another type of artificial mummification, which may or may not include the removal of organs, is known as mud patina and was rarely used. It consisted of drying the corpse with embers and applying a thin, homogeneous layer of mud, which hardened as it dried. The mixture was applied from head to toe, and was prepared with earth and agglutinating substances, possibly the blood of the deceased, as well as fish and animal remains.
